Understanding Menopause and how Homeopathy can help
Menopause can be the beginning of a new, empowering chapter in life, a journey of deep inner healing, supported by well-chosen remedies and holistic care.
What is Menopause:
Menopause is a natural biological process that signifies the end of a woman's menstrual cycle, typically occurring in late 40s to early 50s. It is diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. During this time, the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen and progesterone, leading to the end of fertility.
Menopause can be induced artificially, such as surgical menopause: when the ovaries and or the uterus are removed, often due to conditions like endometriosis, ovarian cancer, or other disorders of uterus and ovaries. The sudden drop in hormone levels can cause immediate menopausal symptoms.
Chemical or medical menopause can be triggered by medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which may damage the ovaries and disrupt hormone production. Additionally, certain medications or hormone-disrupting therapies can induce menopause prematurely.
Whether natural or induced, menopause brings a range of physical and emotional symptoms, including exhaustion, hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, loss of libido, changes in bone, urinary and heart health. Understanding the cause and type of menopause can help in managing symptoms effectively, whether through lifestyle and nutritional changes, hormone replacement therapy or alternative treatments like homeopathy.
It can be a wake up call in self care, a time to put new habits in place.
Often its a time when the woman is juggling so much in life: children could be going through a challenging period, parents are aging, significant others may be preoccupied with work, grief of loved one or other demands that can add to the stress of coping with changes going on in the body.
Menopause is a time when past emotions / experiences that was put in the background can resurface. It’s a getting to know yourself time. Embracing an inner healing journey will bring newfound freedom, confidence, and vitality.
Signs of Menopause
Common signs of menopause include:
Irregular periods: Changes in the frequency, flow, or duration of periods.
Hot flushes: Sudden feelings of warmth, often followed by sweating.
Night sweats: Hot flushes that occur at night, disrupting sleep.
Sleep disturbances: Difficulty falling or staying asleep.
Fatigue: due to natural changes and poor sleep but good to rule out anaemia, hypothyroidism or other pathological causes.
Mood swings: Increased irritability, anxiety, or feelings of sadness.
Vaginal dryness and Decreased libido: Lower interest in sex.
Prolapse and stress incontinence
Increased susceptibility to vaginal or urinary tract infection.
Memory or concentration issues: Often called ‘brain fog’.
Weight gain: Changes in metabolism that can lead to weight gain.
Thinning hair, brittle nails or dry skin: Hormonal shifts can affect hair and skin texture.
Bone and cardiac changes.
These signs can vary from woman to woman and may occur months or even years before menopause fully begins.
Menopause and Homeopathic Treatment
The homeopathic view of menopause is that the symptoms experienced during this time are not just a result of hormonal changes, but represent deeper, long-standing imbalances within the body. Homeopathy believes that these symptoms are the body's way of signaling that a long-standing issue or disruption in the system is coming to the surface.
Homeopathic treatments aim to address these root imbalances by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, rather than merely masking the symptoms.
Menopause is a time to focus on nutrition, exercise, and cultivating a positive mindset. Understanding the triggers, and seeking support can greatly enhance well-being and self-value during this transition.
